Vegan food is very much on the up in the City of Gold. Plant-based vegetarian cuisine is just as appealing as meat-based dishes, thanks to the plethora of colours, textures and flavours now available to order. Speaking of flavours, if you're mad about spicy foods that tingle the taste buds, don't worry: Dubai's eateries are jam-packed with tempting small vegan and vegetarian dishes to share with friends that pack a punch of spice and heat.

1. Aloo Gobhi Udaigiri, Patiala
Vegetarian main courses have never been so appealing. Dubai's range of Indian cuisine for vegans has been extended by celebrity chef Kunal Kapur, whose Patiala restaurant offers some of the most authentic fare in the city. With a range of vegetarian dishes to choose from, our favourite was the Aloo Gobhi Udaigiri, with the cauliflower and cubed potatoes perfectly taking on the tangy, spicy flavours of the flavoured masala and the curry leaves.
2. Bhindi Do Pyaza, 25 Degrees North
Downtown's 25 Degrees North is another Indian restaurant that specialises in its own vegetarian menu of appetisers and curries to order. In fact, there are 15 vegetarian curries to choose from at the time of writing, many of which are marinated in delicious spices and chillies. The Bhindi Do Pyaza featured a deep-fried lady's finger – not a real finger, okra! – slow cooked in spices, chillies and flavoured with cumin, tomatoes and diced onion.
3. Avocado Toast, Taqado Mexican Kitchen
One of our favourite Mexican restaurants in Media City is the Taqado Mexican Kitchen. It's perfect for light bites for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Vegans will be particularly fond of their Avocado Toast breakfast dish featuring fresh avocado, an organic boiled egg and boiled tomatoes topped with sunflower seeds and chilli flakes. It's a great way to start the day, full of warmth and depth of flavour!
4. Falafel Karamteena, Karamteena Restaurant
Specialising in Middle Eastern mezze, Karamteena Restaurant is also in the thick of the action near Media City. They have a great selection of hot and cold mezze available to order, but we're particularly fond of the former. Their home-made chickpea falafel is jam-packed with fresh onions and signature seasonings, served with a spicy sauce, home-made tahini and fresh lime pickles – a real feast!
5. Konbao Tofu, Taipei Dao Teahouse Restaurants
Taipei Dao is a slick Taiwanese restaurant specialising in dim sum and fresh tofu dishes. Their Konbao Tofu is simply perfect for vegans that like a real blast of dried chilli in their food. It's a dish which appeases all elements of your taste buds, with the sweetness of the palm sugar, the heat of the dried chilli and the saltiness of the peanut, palm sugar and soy sauces to provide the perfect balance and base for the tofu.
