Rise to fame
It wasn't until the noughties that quinoa leapt into our hearts – and stomachs – and gained its superfood status. Gluten-free and high in dietary fibre, protein and vitamins, this little grain is a popular choice for all. In fact, people love quinoa so much that 2013 was dubbed the International Year of Quinoa by the UN's Food and Agriculture people.
Together with other ingredients like creamy avocado, juicy cucumber and tender chicken breast, this soft grain makes a delicious meal that bursts with goodness. Packed into a wrap, in a salad or as a side, quinoa works every time.
Though it didn't rise to global popularity until this century, quinoa has been knocking around in cooking pots for more than 3,000 years – since it was first discovered by the Andean people in Peru and Bolivia. The Incas even called it 'the mother of all grains' – and that's quite a title.
After the Spanish invasion of South America, colonists scaled down their growing of quinoa, introduced wheat instead, and that was that – quinoa went underappreciated for centuries. We don't quite know who decided to show the grain some love a few years ago, but we're glad they did.
When it comes to turning this super grain into a memorable meal, you can't go wrong with the Quinoa Salad at Joey's. Mixed with avocado, pomegranate, rocket leaves, sweetcorn, pine nuts, lemon zest, parsley, shallots and drizzled with a garlic and lemon honey dressing, healthy eating never tasted so good.
Scotta sub some extra protein into their quinoa salad, for an extra burst of goodness that's perfect post-workout or for a hearty lunch. White quinoa plays a supporting role to chicken, fresh mixed leaves, cucumber, bell pepper, sweetcorn, parsley and a sweet sundried tomato dressing. Vegetarians can get their protein boost too, with roasted almonds topping off their colourful Mixed Quinoa salad.
They're also on the vegetarian train at Joga. We love their Green Quinoa – a medley of quinoa with romaine lettuce, avocado, baby spinach, creamy feta cheese and sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Taking inspiration from the Middle East, their Quinoa Tabbouleh packs in fresh parsley, tomatoes, lettuce feta cheese and pomegranate seeds for an unforgettable sweet-savoury contrast.
