There are so many places to enjoy really fantastic sushi in the UAE in general and Dubai in particular, that we really are spoilt for choice. Then, when it comes to picking your absolute favourite sushi dish, the decision becomes even trickier still.
Do you go for the traditional and simple combination of fish, rice and wasabi or something a little more unusual? Or maybe sushi as part of a great bento box is what you'd fancy? As you can see, it's a question that's incredibly difficult to answer even before we start to think about things like sashimi and avocado-rich California rolls. But the truth is that you're going to have your favourites and we're going to have ours – and here are just five of the many hundreds that we have to choose from.
1. Lion King Roll, Miyabi Sushi and Bento
Who could resist this great offering from Miyabi Sushi and Bento for the name alone? It really is the king of sushi, not to mention the jungle, thanks to its winning combination of baked salmon, spicy mayo, mozzarella, tangy lemon cream and sweet teriyaki sauce all served up in a California roll. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.
2. Moriawase Ume, Sakura Japanese Restaurant
Moriawase Ume is one of the more ingredient-packed varieties on our list and is a real speciality of the Sakura Japanese Restaurant. It consists of a mixture of nigiri and makimono rolls with cherry blossom salmon, spicy tuna, octopus and eel in different - and truly mouth-watering - combinations that are sure to hit the sweet spot.
3. Sushi Burger, Yamaha Café
With the extensive motorbiking imagery throughout the Yamaha Café, wouldn't you just expect our choice from there to have a distinctive US twist? The Sushi Burger is one of their Special Plates and consists of a very appealing mix of rice, nori, avocado, salmon, tuna, Hamachi and tobico with wasabi and ginger to add a bit of heat.
4. Rock N Roll, SushiArt
SushiArt have a number of signature rolls but, for our money, this is the outstanding one. On top there's glazed salmon, teriyaki sauce and chilli crisps while inside there's tuna, asparagus, avocado and masago plus a piquant and spicy sauce. Rock N Roll, is definitely a hit and worth a try - or two, or three.
5. Gold Ring, Manga Sushi
Once you've tasted it you might think this very unusual sushi is called Gold Ring because it's so delicious you'd want to marry it, but you'd be wrong! In fact, Manga Sushi created it in honour of the manga comic of the same name, reportedly the first ever produced in the UAE. It's certainly action-packed when it comes to its flavour, with prawn, avocado, cheese and eel served with a spicy teriyaki sauce.
