Welcome to Deliveroo HQ. Not just a hub of food tasting and deliveries but a hive of interesting employees, all with their own unique backstories! Today, instead of perusing menu items, we're giving you a chance to get to know the Roo Crew. Welcome to 'Humans of Deliveroo'.
Meet Adrian, our Head of Business Development. Adrian is a Deliveroo connoisseur and wakeboarding enthusiast who's been living in Dubai for the past 6 years.
So Adrian where were you based before you lived in Dubai?
I'm originally from the US - I was born in California but I spent most of my life just North of Boston, in the New England area. I actually lived in Boston for about a year and a half before I came out here.
So what was it that actually brought you to Dubai?
So I was actually at school at the time, doing my Masters in Middle Eastern Studies - my Dad's Iranian and I wanted to relearn Farsi and learn Arabic - and while I was there I was waiting tables at a nice French restaurant. One of the guests I met there, we developed a friendship and he offered me a job out here in Dubai. I've been here ever since!
You've been here 6 years now, you must have seen it change quite a bit!
Yeah that's actually one of my favourite things about Dubai. I love that it's changing all the time. When I moved here, even just 6 years ago, it felt really under construction and obviously a lot had been built before I'd gotten here. It's grown so much since then. I love how much it changes, it feels very dynamic!
So can you tell us a little bit about your role here at Deliveroo?
Yeah, I'm the Head of Business Development so I work with the Account Managers and the Business Development Management team. Our roles are to go out and find the best restaurants in the city, sign them up and then develop their business so that they do well on the platform.
So I'm guessing you get to do a fair bit of food sampling!
Yeah, that is one fun perk of the job, for sure! A lot of taste tests at home and in the office - it's great
So when you're not tasting menu samples, what do you like doing?
I love outdoor things - mountain biking, skiing, wakeboarding, that kind of thing. I also love to travel. One of the awesome things about being here is that you're so close to a lot of really neat places. So it's nice to take advantage of that.
Do you have a favourite place to travel to?
I love Sri Lanka. I also love Italy, I used to have my own business designing men's accessories - pocket squares, ties, things like that, and they were produced in Italy. So I got to go there a lot. I sold it just before starting at Deliveroo.
Very interesting! So are you a good cook?
No! I'm a terrible cook! I rely on Deliveroo a lot, even before I was working here!
That's a pretty good testimony! Ok, so let's say that you were going to stay in for the night, watching a film and ordering Deliveroo, what film and restaurant would you recommend?
Ooh, that's tough. There's a lot of good movies out there. I would probably say Interstellar, I watched that a little while ago and was thinking that I wanted to watch it again. And what food would I eat? Again that's difficult, there's so many to choose from! Some favourites are Fuschia, Big Fernand and Tolosa.
Amazing! Now let's say you were going to invite 3 celebrities, they can be alive or dead, to come round and share the food. Who would you invite?
Alive or dead? I would invite some pretty crazy people… Napoleon, maybe Churchill, JFK.
Very historical! Ok now lastly we just have some quick-fire questions. So…
Indian or Chinese food? Indian
Night in or night out? Night out.
Are you a cat person or a dog person? Both!
Pineapple on pizza, yes or no? Yes. Not my favourite but yes.
Spicy food or mild food? Spicy.
Describe the Deliveroo Office in one word. Super-fun. Can that be one word?
Sure, I'll just put a hyphen in it! That's everything! Thanks for your time Adrian!
