Welcome to Deliveroo HQ. Not just a hub of food tasting and deliveries but a hive of interesting employees, all with their own unique backstories! Today, instead of perusing menu items, we're giving you a chance to get to know the Roo Crew. Welcome to 'Humans of Deliveroo'.
Meet Account Executive Michelle, our resident songstress and AcroYoga enthusiast. Michelle is Singaporean but she grew up in Dubai before travelling to America for 6 years to study and work. Michelle's been back in Dubai for 2 years and has since been busy working the music, and food, scene around the city!
So Michelle, what do you like the most about living in Dubai?
I love that it's so international here, I know that everybody says that but I love going out and looking around and knowing that I can't make any assumptions about anyone around me, because even if they look like they're from somewhere, they may have lived somewhere else their entire life! I think you're more likely to find that here - more than anywhere else!
That's very true! So, before you worked at Deliveroo, did you have any interesting jobs?
I worked for another start-up in New York. They were sort of like a crowd-sourcing platform for musicians. So, just for example, I worked with Gramatik. He's a DJ but he wanted to make a short movie, so he started a campaign and offered things like skype sessions for music production tips to his super-fans. Super cool.
That sounds interesting, it's quite different from food, no?
You know what's interesting? It's different but it's not because it was also an online platform so the job was essentially dealing with people and understanding the platform, very similar to Deliveroo. Even though it was a change from music to food, they're my two biggest passions in life! So it felt similar.
So you say food is one of your biggest passions in life, has your view on food changed since you started working at Deliveroo?
I would say I'm definitely more enthusiastic when I'm ordering food! And I love finding out about new restaurants at work because it gives me new places to try! Especially in areas that I never usually go to.
So tell us about your hobbies, what do you like to do when you're not working?
Well I perform, I actually sing on the side around Dubai. So I do Wednesday nights at Intersect by Lexus - I sing with an amazing saxophonist there. I do a lot of Pop covers and I love to sing Funk music and Soul music when I can.
What are your favourite songs to perform?
I love 'I'd Rather Go Blind' by Eta James and 'Pretty Wings' by Maxwell. They're both, kind of like, Soul. You should listen to them, they're amazing songs. Oh, and I also assist at an AcroYoga class. Do you know what AcroYoga is? Here, I'll show you a picture.
Looks dangerous! Have you gotten any injuries doing that?
No, I haven't had any injuries yet! Fingers crossed I won't!
Fingers crossed! So, if you were going to stay in for the night, watching a film and ordering Deliveroo, what film and restaurant would you recommend?
That's tough, I love horror movies but I don't want to come off like a psycho!
Just say The Notebook!
I've actually never seen The Notebook, which some people think is an interesting fact. I tried to watch it once and I fell asleep! I actually love the film Lucky Number Slevin, because the dialogue is really witty and back and forth. And what would I order? Friends Avenue.
So if you could invite any 3 celebrities, alive or dead, to a dinner party - who would you choose?
Hmm. Elvis, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Actually, maybe I would invite Beyoncé over. We can have her in place of…
Have her as well! You could make a super-group! Ok, now lastly we just have some quick-fire questions. So…
Indian or Chinese food? Chinese.
Night in or night out? Night in.
Are you a cat person or a dog person? Dog Person.
Pineapple on pizza, yes or no? Yes.
Spicy food or mild food? Spicy.
Describe the Deliveroo Office in one word. Noisy!
